Beginners should start with one putter and one midrange, for example the Discmania Active Base Sensei and the Discmania Neo Origin, and add a fairway driver once their basic throw has settled. Distance drivers with a speed of 11–14 are best left for later, because they need a lot of arm speed to fly as designed.
Updated September 2026.
Below you will find well-selling models from several manufacturers for each disc type. The selection is based on our sales and stock data from autumn 2026.
Disc types at a glance
Disc golf discs fall into four main types: putters for putting and the short game, midranges for medium-length throws, fairway drivers for controlled distance and distance drivers for maximum distance. The higher a disc’s speed rating, the more arm speed it needs. If your arm speed is not enough, a fast disc will not fly further. Instead, it falls short and fades early.
| Disc type | Typical speed | Use | Price range of the models in this guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Putter | 1–4 | Putting and short approaches | around €13–19 |
| Midrange | 4–6 | Medium-length, accurate throws | around €18–20 |
| Fairway driver | 6–9 | Controlled distance on fairways | around €19–25 |
| Distance driver | 10–14 | Maximum distance, needs the most arm speed | around €19–25 |

Every disc has four flight numbers: speed, glide, turn and fade. Turn tells you how much the disc drifts at the start of its flight when it is thrown at full speed.
For a right-handed backhand throw, an understable disc with a turn of, for example, -2 or -3 drifts to the right early in the flight, and fade brings the disc back to the left at the end. The higher the fade, the harder the disc hooks left at the end. A disc like this is called overstable. For a right-handed forehand and a left-handed backhand, the directions are mirrored.
Weight and disc sets
A disc’s weight affects how easy it is to control. A lighter disc, around 150–165 grams, gets going more easily with less arm speed, so it often suits beginners and juniors. A heavier disc, around 170–175 grams, holds its line better in the wind and in hard throws, and it is typically the choice of more experienced players.
A disc set is an affordable way to get a putter, a midrange and a driver in one go. You cannot choose the models or weights in a set. Once you know what kind of disc suits your throw, buying individual discs pays off, because you can pick exactly the right model, plastic and weight.

Discmania Disc Golf Set Active Soft
A three-disc starter set: Sensei putter, Maestro midrange and Magician driver. The discs are light, in the 150-gram class, and made from soft plastic.

Discmania Disc Golf Set Active
The same three-disc line-up: Sensei putter, Maestro midrange and Magician driver. A good starter set, and a popular gift.
For beginners: how to choose your first discs
If you have not thrown much yet, choose low-speed models. They are easier to fly as designed even with modest arm speed. Avoid speed 11–14 distance drivers at first, because they need a lot of arm speed to work properly.
- First disc: the Discmania Active Base Sensei putter, which works for both putting and approach shots.
- Second disc: the Discmania Neo Origin midrange, which flies straight even with moderate arm speed.
- Third disc, when you are ready for a driver: the Discmania FD or the Axiom Neutron Bokeh. Both have a speed of 7, so they suit beginners better than speed 12–13 distance drivers.

Putters
Putters are used for putts and short approaches. Many beginners also throw them on short holes, because a slow disc flies predictably.
| Model | Manufacturer | Plastic | Speed | Glide | Turn | Fade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D-Line Flex 2 P2 | Discmania | D-Line Flex 2 | 2 | 3 | 0 | 1 | Straight, reliable putting disc |
| Active Base Sensei | Discmania | Active Base | 3 | 3 | 0 | 1 | Beginners, putting and approaches |
| Electron Proxy | Axiom Discs | Electron | 3 | 3.5 | -1 | 0.5 | Straight with lots of glide, our best-selling putter model in 2026 |
| ESP Zone | Discraft | ESP | 4 | 3 | 0 | 3 | Overstable approach disc |

Discmania D-Line Flex 2 P2
Discmania’s classic putter in flexible D-Line Flex 2 plastic. A straight flight and a small fade make it a safe choice for putting.

Discmania Active Base Sensei
A low-profile, grippy putter whose neutral flight finishes with a gentle fade. A good first disc for both putting and approaches.

Axiom Discs Electron Proxy
A straight, glidey putter that holds its line even in a beginner’s throw. The Proxy is our best-selling putter model in 2026.

Discraft ESP Zone
An overstable approach disc that stops quickly and does not glide far past the basket. A good second putter once you have mastered your first one.
Midranges
A midrange is a versatile disc for medium-length throws. For a beginner it is often the most important disc, because it teaches you to throw straight lines.
| Model | Manufacturer | Plastic | Speed | Glide | Turn | Fade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Z Line Buzzz | Discraft | Z Line | 5 | 4 | -1 | 1 | Versatile, one of our best-selling midranges in 2026 |
| Neo Origin | Discmania | Neo | 5 | 5 | -1 | 1 | Beginners, flies straight with moderate arm speed |
| Neutron Soft Hex | Axiom Discs | Neutron Soft | 5 | 5 | -1 | 1 | Straight flight, the Hex is our best-selling midrange model in 2026 |
| Neo Method | Discmania | Neo | 5 | 5 | 0 | 3 | Overstable, for wind and hard throws |

Discraft Z Line Buzzz
A well-known midrange that holds the line you choose and works for both approaches and short holes. Z Line is a durable premium plastic.

Discmania Neo Origin
Flies straight even with moderate arm speed. With a harder throw it gives a gentle turnover line, which for a right-handed backhand curves to the right.

Axiom Discs Neutron Soft Hex
A straight, predictable midrange in grippy Neutron Soft plastic. The Hex is our best-selling midrange model in 2026.

Discmania Neo Method
An overstable midrange for a strong arm and windy conditions. It suits more experienced players when the Origin or Hex starts to turn too much in their throw.
Fairway drivers
A fairway driver makes a good first driver. It gives you more distance than a midrange, but it is much easier to control than a distance driver.
| Model | Manufacturer | Plastic | Speed | Glide | Turn | Fade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C-Line FD | Discmania | C-Line | 7 | 6 | 0 | 1 | The FD is our best-selling fairway driver model in 2026 |
| Q-Line FD | Discmania | Q-Line | 7 | 7 | 0 | 1 | The same model in Discmania’s Premier plastic |
| Neutron Bokeh | Axiom Discs | Neutron | 7 | 6 | 0 | 1 | Lots of glide and a soft finish |
| Neo Essence | Discmania | Neo | 8 | 6 | -2 | 1 | Understable, turnover lines |
| Neutron Impulse | MVP Disc Sports | Neutron | 9 | 5 | -3 | 1 | Very understable, hyzer flip lines |

Discmania C-Line FD
Low speed, plenty of glide and an almost straight flight make the FD an easy driver to control at any skill level. C-Line is a durable premium plastic.

Discmania Q-Line FD
The same FD in Q-Line, Discmania’s Premier plastic. In the manufacturer’s flight numbers, the Q-Line FD has a glide of 7.

Axiom Discs Neutron Bokeh
Plenty of glide and a soft finish make the Bokeh easy to control on tight wooded fairways and open holes alike.

Discmania Neo Essence
An understable fairway driver with lots of glide. For a right-handed backhand it curves to the right in a controlled way, so it suits turnover lines and tailwinds.

MVP Disc Sports Neutron Impulse
A very understable driver with a speed of 9. With a hard throw it gives a hyzer flip line, where a disc released on a hyzer angle flattens out and flies far and straight.
Distance drivers
Distance drivers need the most arm speed. If your arm speed is not enough, a distance driver will not fly further than a fairway driver. It falls short and fades early, which for a right-handed backhand means to the left. It is worth moving to a distance driver once your fairway driver flies a controlled 80–100 metres or so.
| Model | Manufacturer | Plastic | Speed | Glide | Turn | Fade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q-Line DD1 | Discmania | Q-Line | 11 | 6 | -1 | 2 | Our best-selling distance driver model in 2026 |
| Q-Line DD3 | Discmania | Q-Line | 12 | 6 | -1 | 2 | Faster, for more arm speed |
| Halo Star Destroyer | Innova | Halo Star | 12 | 5 | -1 | 3 | Well known and reliable, strong fade |
| Neo Enigma | Discmania | Neo | 12 | 5 | -1 | 2 | Less fade than the Destroyer |

Discmania Q-Line DD1
Our best-selling distance driver model in 2026. Its speed of 11 makes it easier to fly as designed than the DD3, so it is a good first distance driver once your arm speed is there.

Discmania Q-Line DD3
A speed 12 distance driver. The other flight numbers match the DD1, but the DD3 needs more arm speed and rewards a hard throw with distance.

Innova Halo Star Destroyer
One of the best-known distance drivers and among our best sellers in 2026. A strong fade makes it reliable in a headwind too.

Discmania Neo Enigma
A speed 12 distance driver with less fade than the Destroyer. It suits players who want a long flight with a straighter finish.

Frequently asked questions
How many discs do I need to start with?
One putter and one midrange are enough for your first rounds. Add a fairway driver once your basic throw has settled, and a distance driver only when your fairway driver flies under control.
What disc weight suits a beginner?
If your arm speed is not high yet, a lighter disc of around 150–165 grams reaches its full distance more easily. More experienced players with a harder throw usually prefer heavier discs of around 170–175 grams, because they stay more stable in the wind.
Should I buy premium plastic or base plastic?
Base plastic, such as Discmania D-Line or Axiom Electron, is more affordable and often grippy, but it wears faster. Premium plastic, such as C-Line, Q-Line, Z Line or Neutron, lasts longer and keeps its flight for longer, but costs more. Base plastic is perfectly fine for a beginner.
Why does my disc hook left straight away or turn too far right?
For a right-handed backhand, a disc that hooks left straight away and hardly glides is probably too fast or too overstable for your arm speed. Try a slower, more understable model such as the Neo Origin or the FD. If the disc turns hard to the right and never comes back, try a more stable model with a turn closer to zero. For a right-handed forehand and a left-handed backhand, the directions are mirrored.
What is the difference between a used disc and a new one?
A new disc flies close to the manufacturer’s flight numbers. A used disc has often become more understable through wear, which can suit an experienced player. For a beginner, a new disc is the more predictable choice, but our used discs are an affordable way to add an extra disc to your bag.
