Frisbeegolf on hauska, edullinen ja monipuolinen harrastus, joka sopii lähes kaikille. Harrastuksen aloittaminen on helppoa, eikä se vaadi suuria alkuinvestointeja. Suomessa on erityisen hyvät mahdollisuudet lajin harrastamiseen, sillä maassa on runsaasti ilmaisia ratoja lähes jokaisella paikkakunnalla. Tässä oppaassa käydään läpi frisbeegolfin alkeet ja annetaan vinkkejä, joilla pääset helposti alkuun – ilman aiempaa kokemusta.

Mitä frisbeegolf on?

Frisbeegolf on lajina hyvin samankaltainen kuin perinteinen golf, mutta golfmailojen ja -pallojen sijaan käytetään frisbeetä (tai toiselta nimeltään kiekkoa). Tavoitteena on saada frisbeegolfkiekko heitettyä mahdollisimman vähin heitoin maalikoriin.

Suomessa laji on erityisen suosittu, ja frisbeegolfratoja löytyy eri puolilta maata ilmaiseksi. Ratoja on eri tasoisia, joten harrastus sopii sekä aloittelijoille että kokeneemmille heittäjille.

Mitä välineitä tarvitaan?

Frisbeegolfin aloittaminen ei vaadi suurta välinearsenaalia. Ensimmäisiä heittoja varten tarvitset vain yhden tai muutaman kiekon. Usein aloittelijat miettivät, pitääkö heti hankkia useampi kiekko, mutta tämä ei ole välttämätöntä. Yksi kiekko riittää hyvin, ja kokeneemmat harrastajat suosittelevat aloittelijoille usein kiekkoa, joka on helppo hallita ja jolla oppii heittämisen perusteet. Olemme tehneet tätä varten myös frisbeegolfkiekon valintaoppaan.

Frisbeekiekkoja on kolmenlaisia:

1. Putterit: Lyhyisiin heittoihin ja tarkkoihin lähestymisiin suunnitellut kiekot.
2. Midarit: Keskipitkiin heittoihin ja tarkkuutta vaativiin lähestymisiin sopivat kiekot.
3. Draiverit: Pitkiin heittoihin tarkoitetut kiekot, mutta ne vaativat enemmän heittotekniikkaa ja voimaa. Draivereita ovat myös lyhyemmille matkoille tarkoitetut väylädraiverit.

Suosittelemme aloittelijalle putteria tai lähestymiskiekkoa (midari, midrange) kiekkoa, koska ne ovat helpompia hallita ja niillä on hyvä harjoitella heittämistä.

Mistä aloittaa – ilmaiset frisbeegolfradat ympäri Suomen

Suomi on yksi maailman parhaiten frisbeegolfradoilla varustetuista maista. Ratoja on tarjolla niin kaupungeissa kuin pienemmillä paikkakunnilla, ja valtaosa näistä radoista on maksuttomia. Tämä tekee lajista erittäin saavutettavan, sillä kynnys kokeilla frisbeegolfia on hyvin matala. Ilmaiset radat ovat erinomainen tapa kokeilla lajia ilman sitoutumista ja saada tuntumaa heittämiseen ja erilaisiin väyliin. Frisbeegolfissa on ratoja, jotka vaihtelevat lyhyistä ja helpoista väylistä haastavampiin ja pidempiin väyliin, joiden pituudet voivat olla mitä tahansa 50 metristä useisiin satoihin metreihin.

Paikkakuntien omat liikuntapuistot ja ulkoilualueet tarjoavat yleensä frisbeegolfratoja, ja monet radat sijaitsevat kauniissa luontoympäristössä, mikä tekee harrastamisesta erityisen mukavaa. Opettele perusheitot

Frisbeegolfissa on muutama perusheitto, jotka auttavat sinua alkuun:

1. Rystyheitto: Tämä on yleisin heittotyyli, jossa kiekkoa pidetään kiinni rystypuolella ja heitto tapahtuu kyljen sivulta. Rystyheitto on yleensä helpoin aloittelijalle.
2. Kämmenheitto: Kämmenheitossa kiekkoa pidetään kiinni kämmenpuolella ja se heitetään rintakehän edestä. Tämä heitto antaa kiekolle erilaisen lentoradan, ja on hyödyllinen, kun tarvitsee heittää oikealle kaartuva heitto.
3. Putti: Kun olet lähellä koria, kannattaa käyttää putteria ja kehon edessä tapahtuvaa lyhyttä heittoa. Putterilla heitetään lyhyitä, hallittuja heittoja, joilla tähdätään suoraan koriin.

Heittotekniikan oppiminen vie aikaa, mutta aluksi riittää, että saat kiekon liikkeelle ja tunnet sen hallinnan.

Käytännön vinkit aloittelijalle

Aloittelijana kannattaa pitää mielessä muutama käytännön vinkki:

• Aloita helpolta radalta: Valitse aluksi lyhyempi ja helpompi rata. Tämä auttaa sinua saamaan onnistumisen kokemuksia ja kehittämään heittotuntumaa ilman turhaa turhautumista.
• Harjoittele rauhassa: Ensimmäisillä kerroilla tärkeintä on nauttia heittämisestä ja tutustua välineisiin. Älä huolehdi tuloksista tai heittopituuksista liikaa – harjoittelun myötä kehityt kyllä.
• Pukeudu sään mukaan: Frisbeegolfia pelataan ulkona, joten pukeutuminen sään mukaan on tärkeää. Hyvät kengät ja mukava vaatetus auttavat keskittymään peliin.
• Kunnioita muita pelaajia ja luontoa: Frisbeegolfissa on tärkeää noudattaa hyviä käytöstapoja radalla. Anna muille pelaajille tilaa ja pidä rata siistinä.

Miksi frisbeegolf kannattaa aloittaa?

Frisbeegolf on loistava tapa liikkua ulkona, nauttia luonnosta ja viettää aikaa perheen tai ystävien kanssa. Laji kehittää käsien koordinaatiota, lihaskuntoa ja keskittymiskykyä, mutta ei vaadi kovaa fyysistä kuntoa. Frisbeegolf tarjoaa myös mahdollisuuden nauttia ympäröivästä luonnosta, sillä radat kulkevat usein kauniiden maisemien halki.

Kiekkotyypit lyhyesti

Frisbeegolfkiekot jaetaan neljään päätyyppiin: putterit lähipeliin ja puttaamiseen, midarit keskipitkiin heittoihin, väylädraiverit hallittuun pituuteen ja pituusdraiverit maksimipituuteen. Mitä suurempi kiekon nopeusluku on, sitä enemmän heittonopeutta se vaatii. Jos heittonopeus ei riitä, nopea kiekko ei lennä pidemmälle, vaan se jää lyhyeksi ja kaartuu aikaisin feidin suuntaan.

Hinnat ovat verkkokaupan hintaluokkia syyskuussa 2026. Hinta voi vaihdella muovin, version ja ajankohdan mukaan.

Jokaisella kiekolla on neljä lentonumeroa: nopeus (speed), liito (glide), vakaus (turn) ja feidi (fade). Numerot käydään tarkemmin läpi oppaassa Frisbeegolfkiekkojen lentonumerot ja ominaisuudet.

Vakausluku kertoo, kuinka paljon kiekko kaartuu lennon alussa, kun se lentää täydellä nopeudella. Oikeakätisen rystyheitossa alivakaa kiekko, jonka vakaus on esimerkiksi -2 tai -3, kääntyy lennon alussa oikealle, ja feidi vie kiekkoa lennon lopussa vasemmalle. Mitä suurempi feidi on, sitä jyrkemmin kiekko kaartuu lopussa vasemmalle. Tällaista kiekkoa kutsutaan ylivakaaksi. Oikeakätisen kämmenheitossa ja vasenkätisen rystyheitossa suunnat ovat peilikuvat.

Paino ja kiekkosetit

Kiekon paino vaikuttaa hallittavuuteen. Kevyempi kiekko, noin 150–165 grammaa, lähtee helpommin liikkeelle pienemmällä heittonopeudella, joten se sopii usein aloittelijoille ja junioreille. Painavampi kiekko, noin 170–175 grammaa, pitää linjansa paremmin tuulessa ja kovassa heitossa, ja se on tyypillisesti kokeneempien pelaajien valinta.

Kiekkosetti on edullinen tapa saada kerralla putteri, midari ja draiveri. Setissä mallia ja painoa ei voi valita itse. Kun tiedät, millainen kiekko sopii omaan heittoosi, yksittäisen kiekon ostaminen kannattaa, koska voit valita juuri oikean mallin, muovin ja painon.

Aloittelijalle: näin valitset ensimmäiset kiekkosi

Jos et ole vielä heittänyt paljon, valitse matalan nopeuden malleja. Niitä on helpompi saada lentämään suunnitellusti pienelläkin heittonopeudella. Vältä aluksi nopeuden 11–14 pituusdraivereita, koska ne vaativat paljon heittonopeutta toimiakseen oikein.

• Ensimmäinen kiekko: Discmania Active Base Sensei -putteri, joka sopii sekä puttaamiseen että lähestymiseen.
• Toinen kiekko: Discmania Neo Origin -midari, joka lentää suoraan jo maltillisella heittonopeudella.

Pituusdraiverit

Pituusdraiverit vaativat eniten heittonopeutta. Jos heittonopeus ei riitä, pituusdraiveri ei lennä väylädraiveria pidemmälle, vaan se jää lyhyeksi ja kaartuu aikaisin feidin suuntaan, oikeakätisen rystyheitossa vasemmalle. Pituusdraiveri kannattaa ottaa käyttöön vasta, kun väylädraiveri lentää hallitusti noin 80–100 metriä.

Montako kiekkoa tarvitsen aluksi?

Yksi putteri ja yksi midari riittävät ensimmäisille kierroksille. Väylädraiverin voi lisätä, kun perusheitto on vakiintunut, ja pituusdraiverin vasta, kun väylädraiveri lentää hallitusti.

Mikä kiekon paino sopii aloittelijalle?

Kannattaako ostaa premium-muovi vai perusmuovi?

Miksi kiekkoni kaartuu heti vasemmalle tai kääntyy liikaa oikealle?

Oikeakätisen rystyheitossa kiekko, joka kaartuu heti vasemmalle eikä juuri liu’u, on todennäköisesti liian nopea tai liian ylivakaa heittonopeuteesi nähden. Kokeile hitaampaa ja alivakaampaa mallia, esimerkiksi Neo Originia tai FD:tä. Jos kiekko kääntyy voimakkaasti oikealle eikä palaa, kokeile vakaampaa mallia, jonka vakausluku on lähempänä nollaa. Oikeakätisen kämmenheitossa ja vasenkätisen rystyheitossa suunnat ovat peilikuvat.

Mikä ero on käytetyllä ja uudella kiekolla?

Uusi kiekko lentää lähellä valmistajan lentonumeroita. Käytetty kiekko on usein kulumisen myötä muuttunut alivakaammaksi, mikä voi sopia kokeneelle pelaajalle. Aloittelijalle uusi kiekko on ennustettavampi valinta, mutta käytetyistä kiekoista voi löytää edullisen lisäkiekon.

Beginners should start with one putter and one midrange, for example the Discmania Active Base Sensei and the Discmania Neo Origin, and add a fairway driver once their basic throw has settled. Distance drivers with a speed of 11–14 are best left for later, because they need a lot of arm speed to fly as designed.

Disc types at a glance

Disc golf discs fall into four main types: putters for putting and the short game, midranges for medium-length throws, fairway drivers for controlled distance and distance drivers for maximum distance. The higher a disc’s speed rating, the more arm speed it needs. If your arm speed is not enough, a fast disc will not fly further. Instead, it falls short and fades early.

Every disc has four flight numbers: speed, glide, turn and fade. Turn tells you how much the disc drifts at the start of its flight when it is thrown at full speed.

For a right-handed backhand throw, an understable disc with a turn of, for example, -2 or -3 drifts to the right early in the flight, and fade brings the disc back to the left at the end. The higher the fade, the harder the disc hooks left at the end. A disc like this is called overstable. For a right-handed forehand and a left-handed backhand, the directions are mirrored.

Weight and disc sets

A disc’s weight affects how easy it is to control. A lighter disc, around 150–165 grams, gets going more easily with less arm speed, so it often suits beginners and juniors. A heavier disc, around 170–175 grams, holds its line better in the wind and in hard throws, and it is typically the choice of more experienced players.

A disc set is an affordable way to get a putter, a midrange and a driver in one go. You cannot choose the models or weights in a set. Once you know what kind of disc suits your throw, buying individual discs pays off, because you can pick exactly the right model, plastic and weight.

For beginners: how to choose your first discs

If you have not thrown much yet, choose low-speed models. They are easier to fly as designed even with modest arm speed. Avoid speed 11–14 distance drivers at first, because they need a lot of arm speed to work properly.

• First disc: the Discmania Active Base Sensei putter, which works for both putting and approach shots.
• Second disc: the Discmania Neo Origin midrange, which flies straight even with moderate arm speed.
• Third disc, when you are ready for a driver: the Discmania FD or the Axiom Neutron Bokeh. Both have a speed of 7, so they suit beginners better than speed 12–13 distance drivers.

Putters

Putters are used for putts and short approaches. Many beginners also throw them on short holes, because a slow disc flies predictably.

Distance drivers

Distance drivers need the most arm speed. If your arm speed is not enough, a distance driver will not fly further than a fairway driver. It falls short and fades early, which for a right-handed backhand means to the left. It is worth moving to a distance driver once your fairway driver flies a controlled 80–100 metres or so.

Frequently asked questions

How many discs do I need to start with?

One putter and one midrange are enough for your first rounds. Add a fairway driver once your basic throw has settled, and a distance driver only when your fairway driver flies under control.

What disc weight suits a beginner?

If your arm speed is not high yet, a lighter disc of around 150–165 grams reaches its full distance more easily. More experienced players with a harder throw usually prefer heavier discs of around 170–175 grams, because they stay more stable in the wind.

Should I buy premium plastic or base plastic?

Base plastic, such as Discmania D-Line or Axiom Electron, is more affordable and often grippy, but it wears faster. Premium plastic, such as C-Line, Q-Line, Z Line or Neutron, lasts longer and keeps its flight for longer, but costs more. Base plastic is perfectly fine for a beginner.

Why does my disc hook left straight away or turn too far right?

For a right-handed backhand, a disc that hooks left straight away and hardly glides is probably too fast or too overstable for your arm speed. Try a slower, more understable model such as the Neo Origin or the FD. If the disc turns hard to the right and never comes back, try a more stable model with a turn closer to zero. For a right-handed forehand and a left-handed backhand, the directions are mirrored.

What is the difference between a used disc and a new one?

A new disc flies close to the manufacturer’s flight numbers. A used disc has often become more understable through wear, which can suit an experienced player. For a beginner, a new disc is the more predictable choice, but our used discs are an affordable way to add an extra disc to your bag.

At night, disc golf is played with glow discs that are charged with a UV light. If your favourite disc does not come in a glow version, you can tape a lightweight LED light to its underside or add glow stickers to the top. In winter, grip matters most: choose a soft, grippy plastic, dry the disc between throws and keep your hands warm. In snow, a disc is easiest to find when its colour is bright.

Autumn and winter evening rounds are among the most atmospheric of the season. In this guide we explain how glow discs work and how to charge them, which glow plastics each manufacturer offers, what to know about UV lights and disc lights, and how plastics, grip and players cope in freezing temperatures. Glow discs: how they work

Glow disc plastic is blended with a phosphorescent additive; Prodigy’s 400 Glow, for example, contains phosphorus. The additive stores light and releases it as a glow in the dark. The glow is brightest right after charging and fades gradually, so it is worth charging the disc before every throw. A regular torch will charge a disc too, but a UV light charges it more efficiently and gives a brighter glow. The glow also shows where the disc landed, so a glow disc is easy to find in the dark even in long grass or at the edge of the woods.

Glow plastic can change a disc’s flight slightly compared with the same mould in other plastics. Discmania’s Glow C-Line, for example, typically makes a mould somewhat more stable, and Innova’s Proto Glow Champion feels a little softer in the hand than regular Champion plastic. Check the flight numbers when you pick a glow version to replace a familiar disc.

How to charge a glow disc with a UV light

1. Shine the UV light on the top and underside of the disc from close range, moving it evenly across the whole disc.
2. Recharge the disc before every throw so the glow is at its brightest while the disc is flying and landing.
3. Keep the light in a jacket pocket or an outer bag pocket so it is within reach on every throw.
4. Never shine the UV light into anyone’s eyes.

Which glow plastics each manufacturer offers

Almost every major manufacturer has its own glow plastic. The table below lists the glow plastics in our range and their properties according to the manufacturers’ descriptions.

UV lights and disc lights

A UV light is the most important piece of kit for a glow round. The more LEDs the light has, the faster and more evenly it charges the whole disc. A small light is enough for a putter and fits in a pocket; a larger one charges a driver or several discs at once. LED lights to tape under your disc

MVP’s TRI-LED Light is a lightweight LED strip of about 3 grams with three bright LEDs. Being so light, it has little effect on the disc’s flight. It has three modes: flashing, fast flashing and steady light, and it can be switched off and back on between rounds. Colours are blue, green, red and white.

In our experience, it is best to attach the strip indoors with clear packing tape to the underside of a clean, dry disc. The light shows best through a translucent disc. Each pack contains one LED strip. An LED light needs no charging, so it also suits discs that are not available in glow plastic.

Disc golf in winter and freezing weather

Plastics in the cold

In the cold, all plastics stiffen and grip weakens. Softer, grippier blends such as Soft and Medium versions or base plastics usually keep their grip better in freezing temperatures than hard, slick premium plastics. Keep your discs somewhere warm before the round and dry them between throws so ice cannot form on the surface. Throw a hard, frozen disc carefully near trees and rocks, as plastic stiffened by frost can be damaged more easily.

Grip in wet and cold conditions

Snow and moisture make a disc’s surface slippery. Dry the disc and your hands with a towel before each throw, and use a grip towel if needed to improve your hold even in wet weather.

Bright colours and ribbon in the snow

Choose brightly coloured discs that stand out in the snow, such as pink, orange, red or yellow. White and pale discs easily disappear in a snowdrift. You can attach a thin ribbon, like the kind used for gift wrapping, to a disc so it is easier to locate even if it sinks into the snow. Tape a brightly coloured ribbon about 30–50 cm long to the centre of the underside: it stays visible on top of the snow and barely affects the flight. Watch where every throw lands and fix the spot in your mind using a landmark.

Clothing and warm hands

• Dress in layers so you can shed clothing while walking and add it while waiting.
• Choose a jacket and mid-layer that do not restrict your throwing arm.
• A beanie and neck warmer keep the heat in, and waterproof socks keep your feet dry in wet snow.
• Many players wear thin gloves and take off the glove on their throwing hand for the throw. A hand warmer in your pocket keeps your fingers supple between throws.
• On slippery courses, make sure your shoes have good grip. Many players wear studded shoes in midwinter.

Courses and practice in winter

In winter, course maintenance may be reduced and some courses may even be closed. Some areas, however, have courses adapted for winter conditions where play can continue through the cold months. You can also keep your touch through indoor practice or winter tournaments. Staying safe on a dark course

• Wear a head torch so you can see the terrain, the tee and tree roots. It also helps others notice you.
• Only throw when the fairway is clear. Walkers and other players are hard to see in the dark, so check the fairway with your light before throwing.
• Play in a group if you can and tell someone where you are playing. Keep your phone in a warm pocket, as the cold drains the battery quickly.
• Watch out for slippery tees, rocks and boardwalks. On an icy tee it is safer to throw from a standstill.
• Check the course rules and opening hours, as not every course allows play after dark.

Glow-kiekot: miten ne toimivat

Glow-kiekon muoviin on sekoitettu jälkihohtavaa ainetta, esimerkiksi Prodigyn 400 Glow -muoviin fosforia. Aine varastoi valoa ja luovuttaa sitä pimeässä hehkuna. Hehku on kirkkaimmillaan heti latauksen jälkeen ja himmenee vähitellen, joten kiekko kannattaa ladata ennen jokaista heittoa. Tavallinenkin taskulamppu lataa kiekkoa, mutta UV-lampulla lataus on tehokkaampaa ja hehku kirkkaampi.

Glow-muovi voi muuttaa kiekon lentoa hieman samaan malliin verrattuna. Esimerkiksi Discmanian Glow C-Line tekee mallista tyypillisesti jonkin verran vakaamman, ja Innovan Proto Glow Champion tuntuu kädessä hieman tavallista Champion-muovia pehmeämmältä. Näin lataat glow-kiekon UV-lampulla

1. Valaise kiekon kantta ja pohjaa UV-lampulla läheltä ja liikuta valoa tasaisesti koko kiekon alueelle.
2. Lataa kiekko uudelleen ennen jokaista heittoa, niin hehku on kirkkaimmillaan kiekon lentäessä ja laskeutuessa.

UV-lamput ja kiekkovalot

UV-lamppu on glow-kierroksen tärkein varuste. Mitä enemmän lampussa on ledejä, sitä nopeammin ja tasaisemmin koko kiekko latautuu. Kiekon pohjaan teipattavat LED-valot

MVP:n TRI-LED Light on kevyt, noin 3 gramman lediliuska, jossa on kolme kirkasta lediä. Kevyt liuska ei juuri vaikuta kiekon lentorataan. Kylmässä kaikki muovit jäykistyvät ja ote heikkenee. • Heitä vain, kun väylä on vapaa. Pimeällä kävelijöitä ja muita pelaajia on vaikea nähdä, joten tarkista väylä valolla ennen heittoa.

Start here: how many discs do you carry?

Choosing a bag starts with the number of discs. A bag that is too small quickly becomes cramped, and a bag that is too big is just extra weight on your back. Rule of thumb: choose a backpack that fits your current discs plus about five more. Almost everyone’s collection grows during their first few seasons.

• Under 10 discs: a light shoulder bag or a small backpack is enough.
• 10–18 discs: a backpack with proper shoulder straps, a putter pocket and a bottle pocket.
• Over 18 discs: a tour-level backpack with hip support and room for gear.

Besides discs, you will usually carry a water bottle, a towel, a mini marker disc, snacks and rain gear. The longer your rounds, the more storage space and carrying comfort matter.

Disc golf bags for beginners

A beginner gets by with 3–8 discs, so the bag does not need to be big or expensive. The most important thing is that your discs are easy to carry and your hands stay free. You can get a good beginner bag for under €30.

The Prodigy BP-1 V3 is Prodigy’s largest backpack and the most affordable way to get tour-level space. The main compartment holds 20–26 discs, the top pocket four putters and the front pocket two putters. The expandable side pockets can take around ten more discs or your gear when needed. The backpack also has two insulated one-litre bottle pockets, magnetic-closure accessory pockets, an umbrella pocket, metal support rods and a base reinforced with raised rails. Water-repellent ripstop fabric and a weight of 2.1 kg make it a serious option for competitive players whose budget does not stretch to the premium class.

Discmania Fanatic Sky Backpack

The Discmania Fanatic Sky Backpack is Discmania’s largest backpack and one of the roomiest in the under-€100 price range. The main compartment holds more than 18 discs, the putter slots in the top pocket five putters and the front flap one disc. The convertible side pockets take either water bottles or around ten extra discs, bringing the total capacity to more than 30 discs according to the manufacturer. The backpack has 1.9 cm thick shoulder and lumbar padding, a rigid base with support rails and an umbrella holder. It weighs 1.79 kg.

BX3 or AX6?

What to look for in a disc golf backpack

• Carrying comfort: wide, padded shoulder straps and back support. On a large backpack, hip support is practically essential.
• Standing upright: a good backpack stands steadily on its own even on uneven ground, keeping your discs dry and clean.
• Putter pocket: a separate top pocket puts your putters quickly in your hand.
• Bottle pockets: a one-litre bottle on each side is a big advantage on a long round.
• Storage space: a rain jacket, snacks, towels and valuables all need their own pockets.
• Materials and zips: they decide whether a backpack lasts two seasons or ten.
• Weight: the weight of an empty backpack is especially noticeable if you carry only a few discs.

If you play in wet conditions, a rain cover is the most important accessory for your backpack. A model-specific cover fits snugly and still lets you reach your discs.

Disc golf carts – who are they for?

A disc golf cart is an alternative for players who do not want to, or cannot, carry a heavy backpack. A cart saves your back and shoulders and doubles as a seat. Carts are at their best on flat park courses and during long tournament days. On steep, root-covered wooded terrain, a backpack is more agile.

Does a beginner need a disc golf bag?

You can manage without one if you only have a couple of discs, but with as few as 3–5 discs a bag makes playing much easier. An affordable beginner bag costs less than two discs.

Backpack or shoulder bag?

Brush off dry dirt and wipe with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Leave the backpack open to dry at room temperature. We do not recommend machine washing, as it puts strain on the padding and frame.

Can I try a backpack before buying?

What do you need to get started?

There are three options. With any of them, you can be out on the course the same day.

Which disc suits a beginner?

The most common beginner mistake is buying a disc that is too fast. A distance driver needs a lot of arm speed to fly as designed. With a slower throw, it turns off early and ends up shorter than a putter or midrange.

Every disc has four flight numbers, printed on the disc or shown on its product page: speed, glide, turn and fade. For beginners, three rules of thumb are enough:

• Speed 7 or lower. Putters have a speed of 1–3, midranges 4–5 and fairway drivers 6–8.
• Turn of 0 or below, for example 0, -1 or -2. A disc like this flies straight even with a gentle throw.
• Fade of 2 or less, so the disc does not hook sharply to the side at the end of its flight.

Weight matters too. A disc of 165–175 grams suits most adults. For children and players with a lighter throw, 140–160 grams is easier. In our online shop, you can choose the exact weight and colour of every disc yourself.

How do you find a course?

Disc golf courses can be found in parks and forests all over the world, and many of them are free to play. Finland, where Powergrip is based, has more disc golf courses per capita than any other country in the world – over a thousand in total.

• The UDisc app shows the courses nearest to you, hole maps and reviews from other players. You can also use it to keep score.
• In Finland, Frisbeegolfradat.fi lists all Finnish courses on a map with difficulty ratings.

For your first round, choose a course where most holes are under 100 metres. An open park course is easier than a wooded one, because your disc is easier to find and trees do not stop your throws. UDisc shows the hole lengths of every course, so you can quickly find the easiest ones.

How to play your first round

The idea of disc golf is the same as in golf: you complete the course in as few throws as possible. You can learn the rules in a single round.

1. Each hole starts from the throwing area, known as the tee. The hole sign shows the shape and length of the hole and its target score, known as par.
2. Your next throw is taken from where your previous disc came to rest.
3. The player whose disc is furthest from the basket always throws next.
4. The hole is complete when your disc comes to rest in the basket or in the chains. Add up your throws – the lowest score wins.
5. Do not throw if there are people on or near the hole. Wait until the group ahead is out of your throwing line. If your disc is heading towards people, shout Fore loudly.
6. Let faster groups play through, and take your litter with you.

Your score does not matter in your first few rounds. Many beginners do not keep score at all and simply focus on getting the disc out of their hand with reasonable control.

Three throws to get you going

Backhand

The most common throw. The disc leaves your hand across your body with the back of your hand leading, much like throwing an ordinary frisbee. Start with a standstill throw without a run-up, and focus on releasing the disc flat.

Forehand

The disc is thrown from beside your body with the palm side leading. A right-hander’s forehand fades to the right at the end of its flight – the opposite direction to a backhand – so it lets you get around obstacles from the other side.

Putt

A short throw into the basket from in front of your body. Putting decides your score more often than a long drive, and you can practise it anywhere, even in your own garden.

What to get later on?

You will not need these for your first round, but they make life easier once your disc collection starts to grow.

• Bag or backpack. A small beginner bag holds 6–10 discs and a water bottle.
• Towel. A wet disc slips out of your hand, and dew, rain and snow make discs wet more often than you might think.
• Practice basket for your garden or holiday home. Putting practice is the quickest way to improve your score.
• Used discs. An affordable way to try new models. A used disc is often slightly more understable (usually easier to throw) than a new one, which suits beginners well.

How much does it cost to start playing disc golf?

Is disc golf suitable for children?

Should my first disc be a driver?

Not a distance driver. With a beginner’s throw, it flies shorter than a midrange. A slow, understable fairway driver works well as a third disc alongside a putter and a midrange.

What do the basic disc golf terms mean?

The tee is where you throw from, par is the target score for a hole, and a birdie is a score one throw under par.

Add the disc to your basket and place the order as normal. Write any requests in the order notes, for example:

• Do you want the original stamp left on the disc? Otherwise we remove it. A removed stamp can leave a faint mark.
• Cropping or placement of the image

5. We print, you throw

We print the disc in Kuopio and send it to you within 2–10 days.

Good to know

• In hot stamping, line weight is 1–18 points and text must be at least 12 points. Large solid areas do not adhere well, so break up a large area with a pattern.
• Full-colour printing leaves a film on the surface of the disc. It stands up to wear well, but not as well as a hot stamp.
• On a bottom print, the centre of the disc is left blank.
• You are responsible for the content of the image and for the rights to use it. We may decline to print something, for example on the basis of practices agreed with disc manufacturers or on grounds of good taste.

For a club, a company or a tournament: over 50 discs

Larger runs are hot stamped in a single foil colour on blank, unstamped discs. The minimum quantity is 50 discs and the lead time is 2–4 weeks. The price covers everything: fitting the artwork, the printing plate, the print run and delivery.

The selection changes according to which unstamped discs we have in stock. This was the situation on 13 September 2026:

The selection includes putters, midranges and both fairway and distance drivers, so a single run can cover more than one type of disc. The cheapest way to do a large run is with mini markers.

In brief: the plastic determines three things, namely grip, durability and how the disc’s flight changes over time. Almost every manufacturer has three basic types: an inexpensive base plastic with good grip, an opaque premium (the best combination of grip and durability) and a translucent premium (the most durable and usually the most overstable). For putters the usual choice is a base plastic, and for drivers and midranges a premium.

This guide first goes through the general principles of plastics and then the plastics of 13 manufacturers, in the order in which their discs sell best at Powergrip (sales figures for 2026 to date). What the plastic affects

The mould of a disc golf disc determines the shape of the disc and through that its flight numbers. The plastic determines how the disc feels in the hand, how well it survives impacts and how quickly its flight changes. The same mould, for example the Innova Destroyer or the Discmania FD, is often available in five or more plastics, and the differences are clear in practice.

• Grip: how securely the disc stays in the hand in dry, wet and cold conditions. Base plastics and opaque premium plastics grip best, and translucent ones are the most slippery when wet.
• Durability: how well the disc withstands trees, rocks and asphalt. Translucent premium plastics last best, base plastics worst.
• Stability: the same mould is slightly differently stable in different plastics, and as it wears the disc becomes more understable.
• Stiffness: a stiff disc releases cleanly from the hand and tolerates torque, while a soft one stops better on the ground and in the basket and works in the cold.
• Weight: some plastics make it possible to produce discs that are clearly lighter than usual.
• Price: base plastics are the least expensive and special runs the most expensive. Prices may vary.

• Glow, that is plastic that glows in the dark: it is charged with a UV lamp or with light. A glow blend is often slightly stiffer and more stable than the standard version. In our experience the brightest glowing ones are MVP’s and Axiom’s Eclipse as well as Kastaplast’s K1 Glow.
• Light plastics: discs made with microbubbles or with a lighter blend, such as Innova Blizzard Champion, Latitude 64 Opto Air and Zero Gravity, Discraft Z Lite, Prodigy Air as well as MVP’s and Axiom’s Fission. A light disc flies further at a calm arm speed but is more sensitive to wind. The lightest plastics also float: Latitude 64 Zero Gravity, Dynamic Discs Drift and Kastaplast K4.
• Soft and flexible versions: Innova GStar, Discraft FLX, the Soft versions from MVP, Axiom and Kastaplast as well as Prodigy’s G plastics. At their best in the cold and in approach shots.
• Two-coloured halo, orbit and horizon plastics: the rim and the centre are of different colours. The difference is mainly in appearance, but halo versions are often a touch stiffer and more stable.
• Colour blends and sparkles: swirl, burst, cosmic, spectrum, metal flake and glimmer. The properties match the base plastic, and metal flake is typically slightly more overstable.
• Recycled and bio-based plastics: Kastaplast K1 Grind, Prodigy ReBlend, MVP and Axiom R2 Neutron, Dynamic Discs BioFuzion as well as the plant-based Clash Planty.
• Two-plastic constructions: MVP’s and Axiom’s GYRO overmould, in which a denser rim increases rotational stability, Discmania’s Q-Line Premier, in which mass has been moved to the rim, Latitude 64’s Project Grip and ChainGrip, in which the surface or the outer rim is particularly grippy, Clash’s Tone, in which the lower part of the rim is of a stiffer plastic, and Discraft’s Fuzed Line.

The effect of the plastic on flight and wear

The flight numbers stated by the manufacturer apply to the mould, not to an individual plastic. In practice the same mould behaves slightly differently in different plastics, because the plastic shrinks by a different amount as it cools and this affects the dome of the flight plate and the height of the seam on the rim.

• Translucent premium is on average the most overstable and keeps its stability the longest.
• Opaque premium is on average slightly straighter and often has a touch more glide.
• Base plastic is often close to the flight numbers when new but becomes understable quickly.
• Light plastics produce discs that are more understable and glide further.
• Glow, halo and metal flake versions are often slightly more stable than their base plastic.

Wear is not purely a drawback. Many experienced players throw the same mould at several stages of wear: a new premium disc is the stable version and a worn-in base plastic disc the straight or turning version. If you want a disc that has already been thrown in, used discs are an inexpensive way to try one. It is worth remembering that the differences are averages: the production run, the weight and the shape of the individual disc also have an effect.

How to choose the plastic

By disc type

• Putting putter: a grippy base plastic or a mid-range plastic. Hardness is a matter of taste: a soft one stays in the chains more easily, a hard one releases from the hand more cleanly.
• Driving putter and approach disc: a premium plastic, because the disc takes impacts and is meant to stay the same.
• Midrange: an opaque premium is the safest all-round choice. A base plastic works if you want the disc to wear straight.
• Fairway driver and distance driver: a premium plastic. A sharp rim gets dented quickly in a base plastic, and the flight changes.
• Overstable wind disc: a translucent premium, so that the stability is retained.

By player

• Beginner: an inexpensive base plastic or a light premium; the most important thing is a slow and understable mould at a suitable weight. See discs for beginners.
• Regular player: the putter in a base plastic, the other discs in an opaque premium plastic. One plastic per mould makes it easier to learn the flights.
• Competitive player: the same mould in two or three plastics and stages of wear for different stabilities, plus spare copies of the most important discs from the same run.

By conditions

• Rain and damp: an opaque premium or a base plastic, and take a towel with you.
• Sub-zero weather: soft and flexible blends, because all plastics harden in the cold and hard base plastics can crack on impact.
• Wooded and rocky courses: a translucent premium lasts best.
• Darkness and dusk: a glow plastic and a UV lamp.
• Snow and long grass: a bright colour matters more than the plastic.

The table shows which plastics roughly correspond to one another across manufacturers. There are differences in feel, but with the table you can find the equivalent of a familiar plastic in another brand.

1. Discmania: the plastics

Discmania is a manufacturer founded in Finland in 2006 and the best-selling disc brand at Powergrip so far in 2026. There have been three ranges: Originals (e.g. P2, MD3, FD, DD3), Evolution (e.g. Essence, Method, Instinct) and the inexpensive Active. In recent years moulds have been moved from Evolution to the Originals range; for example, the Tactic became the P4. Each range has its own plastic names, but the logic is the same: a base plastic, an opaque premium and a translucent premium.

The most important new arrival is Q-Line. It is a denser than usual premium blend that was developed for discs using Premier technology: the flight plate can be made thinner and up to 10% of the disc’s mass moves to the rim. According to Discmania this improves how well the disc retains its spin and its glide. So far in 2026 Q-Line is by a clear margin the best-selling individual plastic in our whole range.

Powergrip’s tip: For a putter, D-Line Flex 2 or Exo; for midranges and drivers, Neo or S-Line when you want grip, and C-Line when the disc has to survive trees and stay stable. Q-Line is the choice when you are after more distance from your drivers. For a beginner, Active Premium is an inexpensive first premium disc.

2. Innova: the plastics

Innova, founded in 1983, is a pioneer of the sport and the best-known disc manufacturer in the world. For many players Innova’s plastic names are the common language of the sport: Champion and Star are the benchmarks for premium plastics and DX for base plastics.

In our experience the order of stability between the premium plastics is on average Champion, Halo Star and Star. Metal Flake Champion is more overstable than ordinary Champion and Blizzard Champion clearly more understable, because it produces considerably lighter discs.

Powergrip’s tip: For a beginner, DX or Star in lighter weights; for a developing player, Star and GStar; for hard use and headwinds, Champion and Halo Star.

3. Axiom Discs: the plastics

Axiom Discs belongs to the American MVP family and uses the same GYRO overmould technique as MVP: the core and the rim of the disc are moulded separately, and the rim is of a denser material. The mass is concentrated towards the rim, which increases the disc’s rotational stability. Axiom is recognisable by its colourful rims. The plastics are the same as at MVP and Streamline, so the feel of one brand is familiar across the whole family.

Powergrip’s tip: Neutron is a safe all-round choice and Electron Firm or Soft for putters. Fission when you want a lighter driver with premium durability, and Eclipse or Particle Glow Proton Soft for playing in the dark.

4. MVP Disc Sports: the plastics

MVP Disc Sports is the developer of the GYRO overmould technique. On MVP discs the rim was for a long time always black, but from the 2026 production runs onwards the rim is white. The change affects only the appearance, and discs with black rims are still on sale. The range of plastics is the same as at its sister brands Axiom and Streamline. In our sales so far in 2026 the order for MVP is Neutron, Proton, Fission and Electron.

Powergrip’s tip: Neutron for general use, Proton as the most durable for wooded courses and Fission when you are after a lighter disc. For a putter, Electron.

5. Latitude 64: the plastics

Latitude 64 makes its discs in Skellefteå in Sweden, and the discs of Westside Discs, Dynamic Discs and Kastaplast come from the same factory. For that reason the plastics of Latitude 64, Westside and Dynamic Discs largely correspond to one another. In addition to the standard range, Latitude has the Royal range with its own plastics (Grand, Clear and Sense).

The most recent developments concern grip. Project Grip combines two premium plastics: the surface is extremely tacky, but the core and the rim stay stiff. Project ChainGrip is a putter plastic in which the core and the inner rim are of Zero Hard plastic and the outer rim of the manufacturer’s grippiest blend to date, so that the putt would stay in the chains better.

Powergrip’s tip: Opto is the most durable all-round choice and Gold the same with more grip. From the Royal range, Grand and Clear when you want a more refined feel. For a putter, Zero Medium or the more durable Zero Pro, and if your hold slips when wet, Project Grip.

6. Discraft: the plastics

Discraft is a long-established American manufacturer whose best-known moulds are the Buzzz, the Zone and the Luna. The basic division of the plastics is clear: ESP is an opaque and grippy premium, Z Line the translucent and most durable one.

Powergrip’s tip: ESP when grip is what matters, Z Line when you want the disc to stay the same for years, and Big Z when you are after a stiffer and more stable version. For a putter, Putter Line or Jawbreaker.

7. Prodigy Disc: the plastics

Prodigy Disc names its plastics with numbers. The rule of thumb: the higher the number, the more durable and stiffer the plastic. The suffix G means a grippier and more flexible version. The inexpensive Ace Line range has its own plastic names. The table runs from the base plastics to the premium plastics and finally to the speciality versions.

Powergrip’s tip: For a putter, 300 or 350G when you want grip, and 750 when the putter has to survive drives. For drivers and midranges, 400 is the glossy and slippery all-round choice, while 500 is clearly grippier and slightly softer. If you are after the best grip or a beautiful colour blend, choose 500 Spectrum, and if your grip slips in cold or wet conditions, the G plastics and 300 Fractal are safe choices. Ace Line is an inexpensive way to start.

8. Westside Discs: the plastics

Westside Discs is a brand of Finnish origin whose discs are made at the Latitude 64 factory in Sweden. The plastics correspond to Latitude 64’s plastics under different names: VIP corresponds to Opto and Tournament to Gold.

9. Kastaplast: the plastics

Stockholm-based Kastaplast, part-owned by Latitude 64, is known for one thing above all others: the K1 plastic, which is widely regarded as one of the best combinations of grip and durability in the sport. The range is deliberately narrow.

Powergrip’s tip: K1 for almost everything and K1 Hard for approach discs, K3 for a putter. For playing in the dark, K1 Glow.

10. Streamline Discs: the plastics

Streamline Discs is the third brand in the MVP family. The discs are moulded from a single piece without an overmould rim, so the feel is traditional, but the plastics are exactly the same as at MVP and Axiom.

Powergrip’s tip: The same selection logic as at MVP and Axiom: Neutron for general use and Proton for hard wear. Eclipse is a brightly glowing choice for playing in the dark.

Clash Discs is a Finnish manufacturer whose discs are made in Finland. The range of plastics is clear, and the names tell you the essentials.

Frequently asked questions

Which plastic suits a beginner?

For a beginner, a grippy base plastic suits a putter and either a base plastic or a lighter premium plastic suits drivers and midranges. A base plastic is inexpensive and grippy, while a premium retains its flight for longer. More important than the plastic is choosing a sufficiently slow and understable disc at a suitable weight.

Which is the most durable disc golf disc plastic?

The most durable are the translucent premium plastics, such as Discmania C-Line, Innova Champion, Discraft Z Line, Latitude 64 Opto, MVP and Axiom Proton, Westside VIP and Dynamic Discs Lucid. They typically retain their flight characteristics for years.

Does the plastic affect the flight of the disc?

It does. The same disc mould is usually slightly more overstable in a translucent premium plastic than in an opaque premium plastic, and in a base plastic often the straightest or the most understable. In addition, a base plastic wears quickly, which makes the disc more understable. The differences are averages, and the production run, the dome of the flight plate and the weight also have an effect.

Which plastic is best for a putter?

For putting, most players choose a grippy base plastic, for example Discmania D-Line, Innova DX or KC Pro, Latitude 64 Zero, Axiom and MVP Electron, Prodigy 300 or 350G, Kastaplast K3 or Discraft Putter Line. A putter used for driving is worth choosing in a premium plastic, because it survives impacts better.

Which plastic works best in winter and in the rain?

In the cold the plastic hardens, so softer and more flexible blends work best, for example Innova GStar, Discraft FLX, the MVP and Axiom Soft versions, Kastaplast K1 Soft and Prodigy’s G plastics. In the rain, opaque premium plastics and base plastics grip better than translucent ones. In snow it is worth choosing a bright colour.

Why does the same disc cost a different amount in different plastics?

The price follows the raw material and the manufacturing method. Base plastics are the least expensive, premium plastics clearly more expensive and special runs, such as glow, halo and signature discs, the most expensive. A premium disc lasts many times longer, however, so per use the price difference evens out.

Are the plastics of different manufacturers comparable with one another?

In broad terms they are. Almost every manufacturer has a base plastic, an opaque premium and a translucent premium. For example Innova Star, Discmania S-Line, Discraft ESP, Latitude 64 Gold and MVP Neutron are of the same type. There are still differences in feel and grip, so it is worth trying a plastic in the hand.
